IEC's Leveler Design / Selection Tips

1st Step: Determine load rating requirement.

Weight of product divided by the number of levelers = Load per Leveler.

2nd Step: Determine desired features.

Some key features are material and size of stud and base; swivel or rigid stud; top or bottom end adjustability/installation; non-sliding, non-scratching and/or vibration dampening options; color preference and price. The group descriptions below may help you with this step.

Final Step: Determine desired accessories.

Accessories include corner and side brackets, t-nuts for installation into wood, weld-nuts for metal, propellor nuts for plastic, and threaded inserts for square or round tubing. Additional accessories include extra jam nuts, thread locking nylon patch, hand-wheel adjustment knob, and slip-on rubber pad.

Group Descriptions

Heavy duty levelers:

Typical sizes are 3/8-16, 1/2-13, 5/8-11, 3/4-10, 1-8 and 1 1/4-7. Load ratings range from 2000 pounds to 20,000 pounds. Typical construction is a ball and socket swivel design with a metal base, metal stud or socket with a jam nut supplied on the stud type. Rule of thumb on choosing thread size is that it depends on the length you require and the load. The longer the thread length (for instance, to exceed caster height) and heavier the load, the bigger the thread size and base diameter you should choose. Low profile bases are suggested if you have clearance concerns or need a low center of gravity. The low profile levelers are designed to accomodate any base diameter requirement. A smaller diameter base is sometimes needed in order to clear the swivel radius of a caster. A larger diameter distributes heavy loads better. Acme threads are suggested when repetitive adjustment is required, especially when heavy loads are involved. For seismic applications, we recommended anchoring the equipment to the floor directly, not lagging the leveler to the floor. Lag holes are provided for positioning only.

Medium duty levelers:

.

Typical sizes are 5/16-18, 3/8-16, 1/2-13, 5/8-11 and 3/4-10. Load ratings range from 250 pounds to 2000 pounds. Typical construction is a non-swivel design with a metal stud, a thermoplastic base, jam nut not supplied unless requested (add -JN to P/N). Low profile bases are suggested if you have clearance concerns. The low profile levelers are designed to accomodate any base diameter requirement. A larger diameter base is sometimes needed in order to match the leg size (for instance, on a pool table or conference table) or for dirt or grass applications. A smaller base diameter may be required to allow products to be placed in close proximity to each other or a wall. The largest commonly available t-nuts for wood legs are 1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16 and 1/2-13. The largest commonly available threaded inserts for square or round tubing (sizes from 3/4" to 2") are 1/4-20, 5/16-18 and 3/8-16.

Light duty glides:

Typical sizes are 1/4-20, 5/16-18, 3/8-16 and 1/2-13. Load ratings range from 25 pounds to 250 pounds. Typical construction is a swivel or rigid design with a steel stud, a nylon, metal or vinyl base, jam nut not supplied. Many glides are designed without a hex in order to lower cost and to provide a low profile. In the 1/4-20 and 5/16-18 sizes, the maximum typical thread length is 1-1/2". In applications where the table or equipment will be lifted or tilted from one end, a swivel design or medium duty leveler may be desired. In large quantity applications (5-10,000+), IEC can mold a custom leveler to your specifications using various types of materials and colors. Custom specified moulds can usually be made in 1-2 weeks with production parts available to ship within days thereafter.
